Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo says the club is deeply concerned but holding onto hope for Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who remains under close medical observation following a life-threatening abdominal injury. The 27-year-old forward was placed in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery stemming from internal injuries sustained during Forest’s dramatic 2-2 Premier League clash against Leicester City on Sunday.
The injury occurred late in the match when Awoniyi collided with the post while attempting to convert a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Although Elanga was offside, the assistant referee delayed raising the flag due to the controversial 2020 rule change, which only permits flags to be raised after a play has concluded. This delay has sparked debate, with Forest defender Ola Aina stating that the injury “would not have happened” if the flag had been raised earlier.
Following the incident, Awoniyi was rushed to the hospital where he underwent the first phase of surgery on Monday. A second procedure was completed on Wednesday, after which he was brought out of the coma that same evening. Speaking ahead of Forest’s crucial fixture against West Ham, Nuno confirmed the surgery was successful, but noted that Awoniyi remains under strict medical supervision.
“The surgery went well, thank goodness,” Nuno stated. “He is being monitored and is on the road to recovery. We must wait for the doctors to approve visits. We’re still very worried, but it’s encouraging.”
Forest’s medical team has mandated that Awoniyi remain under observation for a minimum of five days to ensure stability and progress. Nuno expressed his desire to visit the striker soon, emphasizing that Awoniyi’s family is by his side and that their presence is vital for his recovery.

“This has been a very difficult time for all of us,” Nuno added. “The severity of the injury and everything he’s been through have taken an emotional toll on the team. He’s a beloved figure in our squad, and we’re all rallying around him.”
Awoniyi, who joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, has scored 19 goals in 85 appearances for the club and has represented Nigeria internationally since 2021, captaining the Super Eagles in 10 matches. His resilience and leadership have made him a fan favorite and a key figure in Forest’s lineup.
According to Nuno, the entire squad remains in touch with Awoniyi through group chats, offering messages of support and solidarity. “We know he’s doing okay and just needs time,” Nuno said. “I hope he can return to us by next week. He’s a wonderful human being, and this season has been very hard on him. He truly feels unfortunate.”
As news of his injury spreads, fans and the football community have taken to social media to send prayers and well-wishes, hoping for the quick recovery of one of Nigeria’s brightest talents. The club continues to provide updates, and supporters remain united in anticipation of Awoniyi’s return, both to health and to the pitch.
