The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has expressed deep concern over the rising number of catastrophic flooding incidents affecting northern states, including the recent disaster in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In a statement released yesterday, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, who also serves as the Chairman of NSGF, extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Borno State. He urged the federal government and humanitarian organizations to ramp up their relief efforts in the flood-hit regions. The statement was made available to media outlets across the North-East region.

The devastating floods in Maiduguri, caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, have displaced thousands of residents, destroyed critical infrastructure, and submerged large parts of the city. Victims are currently seeking refuge in public shelters, such as schools and worship centers.

Governor Yahaya commended the Borno State government and emergency responders for their rapid response to the crisis. However, he called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies to intensify their interventions, especially for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and displaced families.

Speaking on behalf of the nineteen northern governors, Governor Yahaya expressed solidarity with Governor Babagana Zulum and the affected residents of Borno State. He assured them that with coordinated efforts, they would overcome the devastating impact of the floods and rebuild stronger communities.

The statement, signed by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director-General of Press Affairs, Gombe State Government House, reiterated that the Northern Governors are committed to supporting flood relief efforts and ensuring that the federal government provides necessary aid.

As the situation in Maiduguri continues to unfold, humanitarian organizations and state governments are working around the clock to bring much-needed relief to the victims.
