As Nigerians across the country mark the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a powerful call to action, urging political leaders to urgently confront the nation’s worsening crisis. From rampant insecurity to escalating economic hardship and rising social discontent, Northern CAN says the time for rhetoric is over.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, the Northern CAN expressed deep concern over what it described as a “prevailing atmosphere of fear and despair” that continues to grip the country. The association warned that Nigeria’s unity is being undermined as enemies of peace become increasingly emboldened by the government’s inaction.
Marking the significance of Eid-el-Kabir, which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice, Northern CAN urged the country’s leaders to embody the same spirit of sacrifice and demonstrate real commitment to the nation’s future. The statement called for leaders to rise above partisan interests and fulfill their constitutional and moral duty to protect the lives, dignity, and rights of every Nigerian citizen.
According to Rev. Hayab, millions of Nigerians now live in fear, unable to find solace in either words or promises from those in power. He declared that mere statements are no longer enough, and called for visible, impactful actions to restore public trust and reverse the growing disillusionment among citizens. The association stressed that decisive leadership is critical if the country is to heal from its internal divisions and reclaim a path toward stability.

The message comes at a time when Nigeria’s economy is battling high inflation, unemployment, and the lingering effects of insecurity, which have disrupted daily life and economic activities in several regions. Northern CAN warned that unless urgent steps are taken, the deepening crisis could further erode national cohesion and breed more resentment.
Beyond its message to leaders, Northern CAN also called on Nigerians to use the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir to pray fervently for peace, unity, and compassion. The group encouraged religious and community leaders to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and to resist actions or statements that could fuel division.
As Muslims across the country observe the holy celebration, Northern CAN extended warm greetings to the Muslim Ummah, praying that their sacrifices be accepted and that the season inspires a new wave of selfless leadership and renewed national purpose.
“May Allah accept your prayers and sacrifices,” the statement concluded, “and may this season ignite true leadership and compassion that will guide Nigeria into a brighter future. Eid Mubarak.”
