Former Ebonyi State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister Silas Onu, has debunked claims of a legitimate PDP Congress taking place in the state last Saturday. Speaking in Abakaliki on Monday, Onu asserted that the recent gathering, which named Mr Peter Nwele as state chairman, was merely a social assembly rather than an official PDP Congress.
Onu urged the public to ignore what he described as “falsehoods” circulating in Ebonyi, emphasizing that the alleged Congress violated a standing court order. He noted that attempts to hold such an event disregarded multiple legal restrictions and were simply an affront to judicial authority.
“There is no faction in the PDP,” Onu stated. “This was merely the act of a self-interested individual trying to seize control. This person, who was mistakenly sent to represent Ebonyi in the National Working Committee (NWC), seems to believe the party belongs to him.”

Onu stressed that any so-called Congress defied the law, stating, “You don’t hold a Congress when there is a court order specifically barring it. Several cases are pending, and the court has made it clear—no actions should be taken until all cases are resolved.”
Onu further suggested that the organizers might have been financially motivated, alleging, “Rumors suggest he received funding to cause instability within Ebonyi’s PDP. While this remains unconfirmed, it appears his actions are an attempt to ‘retire’ these funds.”
According to Onu, the individual has already been suspended as a national officer of the party. “This so-called Congress is a futile attempt to stir up conflict. It holds no substance and should not be taken seriously,” he concluded.
