Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has stepped down from his position.
Soneye announced his resignation in a Facebook post on Saturday, expressing gratitude to his colleagues for their support during his 20-month tenure.
“I want to inform you that I have decided to step down from my role as chief corporate communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.
This choice will enable me to spend more time with my family and address personal responsibilities that require my closer attention,” he wrote, receiving praise and commendations from his followers.
He referred to his experience at NNPCL as an “honor,” expressing pride in his contributions to the company’s transformation.
Soneye committed to remaining a “dedicated supporter and ambassador” of NNPC Ltd and encouraged media professionals to continue their “robust, balanced, and constructive reporting” in support of the company’s mission.
“It has been a profound honor to serve both the Company and our country, and to contribute in my own way to the ongoing transformation of NNPC Ltd.
I am deeply thankful for the trust placed in me, the opportunities provided, and the remarkable professionals I have collaborated with, both within and outside the organization.
“I will continue to be a loyal supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go.
I urge you, dear colleagues, to maintain your robust, balanced, and constructive reporting to support the Company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future. With sincere appreciation,” he concluded his message.

Soneye was appointed on October 18, 2023, succeeding Garba Muhammad, who took on the role in August 2021 during a management reshuffle.
Prior to joining NNPCL, Soneye established himself as an international journalist, working in Nigeria, Australia, and the United States.
He previously held the position of Editor for the US Air Force One Magazine in Washington, D.C., and served as President of the Nigerian Media Practitioners in the U.S. capital.
Soneye is a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Society of Professional Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, and the Guild of Corporate Online Media Publishers.
In 2025, he was awarded “Spokesperson of the Year” by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, following similar recognition in 2024.
