The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC L) has announced the scheduled maintenance and shutdown of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC).
The maintenance work is slated to commence on May 24, 2025, as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the operational efficiency and sustainability of its refining capabilities.
NNPCL Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Femi Soneye, detailed the purpose of this shutdown in a statement.
He emphasized that the scheduled maintenance encompasses a comprehensive sustainability assessment designed to enhance the refinery’s performance and longevity.
According to him, the assessment reflects the NNPCL’s proactive approach to refining operations, emphasizing the company’s dedication to maintaining high standards in energy production.

The statement stated: “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) wishes to inform the general public that the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) will undergo a planned maintenance shutdown. This scheduled maintenance and sustainability assessment will commence on May 24, 2025.”
Soneye reaffirmed NNPCL’s commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement, noting that the company is collaborating closely with all relevant parties, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
This cooperative effort, he added, aims to ensure that the maintenance and assessment processes are executed efficiently, with minimal disruption to operations and security of energy supply.
“As the shutdown date approaches, NNPCL has assured the public that updates regarding the maintenance progress will be communicated regularly through official channels.
“NNPCL remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering sustainable energy security,” Soneye concluded, highlighting the strategic importance of maintaining reliable refinery operations for Nigeria’s energy landscape.
