In a move to accelerate the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner, more affordable fuel alternative in Nigeria, NNPC Retail Limited (NRL), a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd., has engaged over 1,000 auto mechanics in a nationwide sensitization effort. The awareness campaign took place at the National Artisans and Technicians Conference, held last week in Lagos, drawing participants from across the country.
This initiative, aimed at empowering auto mechanics and technicians with the knowledge of converting gasoline-powered vehicles to CNG, is part of NRL’s larger strategy to promote sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria’s automotive sector. The event also introduced the participants to NRL’s Oleum lubricant range, which is highly effective for both gasoline and CNG-powered vehicles, underscoring its commitment to excellence and environmental sustainability.
The conference featured hands-on demonstrations of the CNG conversion process, giving mechanics practical insights into how they can incorporate the technology into their daily operations. By simplifying the technical aspects, NRL hopes to demystify CNG conversion and encourage wider adoption of this greener fuel alternative across the nation.
Speaking at the event, Baba Shettima Kukawa, Executive Director of Retail Operations & Mobility at NRL, urged mechanics to embrace the skills required for CNG conversion, noting that this trend will shape the future of Nigeria’s automotive industry.

“We believe that sensitizing mechanics on the importance of CNG adoption is critical to achieving Nigeria’s long-term energy goals. While this engagement focused on raising awareness, we urge artisans to actively pursue the skills required to contribute to this transformative shift toward cleaner and more affordable fuel options. This initiative represents a crucial step in advancing the nation’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future,” Kukawa said.
The leadership of the Motor Mechanics and Technicians Association of Nigeria (MOMTAN) and the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) praised NNPC Retail for taking a proactive approach to the future of automotive fuel solutions. They also called for the expansion of this initiative to cover even more mechanics and technicians nationwide.
In further support of the local automotive sector, NNPC Retail also provided mechanics with tools such as coveralls, toolboxes, and generators to enhance their business operations. This gesture is in line with NRL’s commitment to promoting sustainability and supporting artisans in the industry.
The initiative aligns with the broader strategic vision of NNPC Ltd., which aims to reduce Nigeria’s environmental footprint while making fuel more affordable for consumers. Through these efforts, NNPC Retail is positioning itself at the forefront of the country’s transition to cleaner energy, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
