The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has fiercely accused President Bola Tinubu of betrayal following the shocking surge in fuel prices. The Labour Centre, led by President Joe Ajaero, expressed its outrage over the clandestine increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), calling it a “deep sense of betrayal.”
In an explosive statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, Ajaero highlighted that the NLC had accepted the N70,000 national minimum wage on the condition that fuel prices would remain stable. The sudden price hike has left Nigerians reeling, with the NLC condemning the government’s move as a “ferocious right-wing market policy” that has plunged the nation into unprecedented hardship.

The Congress lashed out at the government’s crackdown on peaceful protesters, the unlawful detention of citizens, and what they described as the “government’s encroachment on the Ministry of Labour and Employment duties.” The statement further demanded the immediate reversal of the fuel price hike, the release of detained protesters, and an end to the recent 250% electricity tariff increase.
NLC warned that it would not back down, vowing to stand firm with the Nigerian people against what it termed as “a culture of terror, fear, and deceit.” The Labour Congress hinted at impending decisions that could have far-reaching consequences, promising that the appropriate organs of the Congress would soon meet to chart the way forward.
