In the wake of severe flooding that recently devastated several communities across Adamawa State, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is taking strategic action to bolster its early warning systems through a strengthened partnership with Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi.

NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to this collaboration during a high-level meeting with ADSU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Augustine Clement, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Professor Anosike emphasized that enhancing meteorological services and data collection is crucial to safeguarding communities vulnerable to climate disasters, particularly those near key water infrastructure like the Kiri Dam. He described Adamawa as a strategic location for advancing climate monitoring and disaster risk reduction due to its agricultural importance and hydrological significance.

“The presence of Adamawa State University in this critical agro-ecological zone opens up enormous opportunities for collaboration in meteorological observation, seasonal forecasting, and climate research that directly support local communities,” Anosike said. He further announced NiMet’s readiness to assist the university in establishing a standard weather station, encouraging academic exchange, and driving research that aligns with national climate resilience goals.

According to him, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will soon be signed to clearly define responsibilities such as station maintenance, data generation, and dissemination. He urged the university to lead the charge in ensuring that communities surrounding it benefit from real-time weather information and climate education.

In his remarks, Professor Augustine Clement commended NiMet’s vital role in national development and disaster preparedness. He assured that ADSU is fully committed to producing climate-smart research that can help mitigate the impact of recurring floods and improve environmental sustainability in Adamawa State.

As extreme weather events continue to threaten lives and livelihoods across Nigeria, this partnership between NiMet and ADSU signals a proactive step toward a more robust early warning system and a climate-resilient future for communities in Adamawa and beyond.
