The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a warning on Tuesday, urging Nigerians to prepare for and build resilience against climate variability and extreme weather events that are increasingly affecting the country.
This alert was part of a one-day sensitization forum held in Abuja, tailored for journalists and civil society organizations, where the agency underscored the vital importance of accurate weather forecasts and timely early warnings in protecting lives and sustaining livelihoods.
The primary aim of the forum was to fortify existing collaboration between NiMet, the media, and civil society groups, equipping them with essential knowledge and tools necessary for the effective dissemination of critical weather information to the public.
Through this partnership, NiMet said it hopes to foster a more informed society that can respond proactively to climate challenges.
Director-General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, encouraged participants to engage actively throughout the forum.
He urged them to ask questions, share insights, and collaborate towards a unified goal, in creating a Nigeria that is not only better informed but also prepared and resilient in the face of climate variability and extreme weather phenomena.

The director general emphasised that the effectiveness of NiMet hinges not merely on the precision of its forecasts, but also on the quality of communication to the public.
He stressed the media’s crucial role in translating complex scientific data into accessible information for all.
Prof. Anosike also highlighted recent initiatives aimed at enhancing service delivery within the agency, including comprehensive staff training programs and improvements to employee welfare.
He reaffirmed the importance of collective efforts in achieving a brighter future where Nigerians are more aware and ready to face climatic changes.
“The forum represents a significant step forward in enhancing collaboration between NiMet and essential stakeholders,” Anosike stated.
These efforts, he added, will directly contribute to the agency’s mission of delivering high-quality meteorological services to the nation
