Several leading figures in Nigeria’s transport sector are turning to vehicle assembly as a strategic response to declining road passenger traffic, marking a significant shift in the country’s transportation industry.

In recent years, at least four major operators have expanded into local vehicle assembly, leveraging decades of industry experience to adapt to changing market realities while creating jobs and improving operational efficiency.

Among those driving this transition are Frank Nneji of ABC Transport Plc, Chidi Anyaegbu of Chisco Transport, Chidi Ajaere of God is Good Motors, and Godwin Ubaka Okeke of GUO Transport. Their investments signal a broader move toward local production of commercial vehicles tailored to Nigeria’s terrain and transport demands.

Under Nneji’s leadership, Transit Support Services Ltd is assembling Shacman trucks, while Anyaegbu has established a production line for Yutong buses in Nigeria. Ajaere’s Jet Systems is producing compressed natural gas powered pickups and minibuses, and Okeke is focusing on assembling durable pickup trucks following his acquisition of ANAMMCO.

The impact of these initiatives is already visible across key sectors, including logistics, construction and mass transit. Locally assembled vehicles are becoming increasingly popular due to their affordability and availability, reducing reliance on imported units.

Notably, Yutong buses have gained a strong foothold in Nigeria, surpassing traditional European brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Volvo in market preference, largely due to cost advantages linked to local assembly.

Industry players say the shift is also driven by the need for sustainability. Chisco Motors recently confirmed the rollout of its assembly operations, producing Yutong luxury buses and Sinotruk trucks as part of efforts to strengthen its fleet and expand services.

A key feature of the company’s expansion is its Drive-To-Own scheme, which allows trained drivers, known as captains, to operate newly assembled vehicles. The initiative is expected to deploy dozens of buses and trucks connecting major routes, including the southeastern corridor to northern Nigeria and the Lagos-Accra West Coast route.

Speaking at a recent event in Lagos, Anyaegbu highlighted his long-term vision of using transport as a tool for economic development and job creation, a philosophy he said has guided his business since its inception.

With facilities such as the Chisco Auto Assembly Plant in Surulere gaining attention, analysts believe the growing focus on local vehicle assembly could accelerate the modernisation of Nigeria’s transport system while strengthening industrial capacity.

The trend underscores a broader transformation within the sector, as operators adapt to economic pressures and position themselves for long-term growth through innovation and local production.
