According to the most recent Global Firepower Index, Nigeria has been recognized as Africa’s third strongest military power.
The updated rankings for 2025, released by Business Insider Africa based on Global Firepower data, reveal Nigeria’s rise from fourth to third place on the continent, surpassing South Africa.
On a global scale, Nigeria has also improved its position from 39th to 31st, achieving a Power Index score of 0.57, which reflects an enhancement in military capabilities.
Egypt and Algeria retain the top two positions in Africa with scores of 0.34 and 0.35 respectively, while South Africa has now dropped to fourth in Africa and 40th worldwide.

Military experts point out that Nigeria’s ascendance in the rankings is indicative of increased spending on defense infrastructure, enhanced counter-terrorism initiatives, and regional collaborations, especially in light of ongoing threats from terrorist entities such as Boko Haram and ISWAP in the Sahel region.
“Countries like Nigeria that are stable are addressing both domestic and regional difficulties by boosting their military strength,” stated security expert Dr. Ayodele Balogun.
“This also sends a message to neighboring countries and allies that Nigeria is re-establishing itself as a stabilizing force in the region.”
As Nigeria enhances its military power, it navigates a sensitive diplomatic path, demonstrating strength both domestically and in West Africa, while promoting restraint and dialogue in global conflicts.
Analysts suggest that Nigeria’s recent military advancements have caught global attention; however, the nation’s dedication to peace could shape its future international role significantly.
