The Toronto Police Department in Canada has arrested a 28-year-old Nigerian man, Babatunde Afuwape, in connection with the killing of a 20-year-old university student, Shivank Avasthi, in Toronto.
The Toronto Police Service confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the suspect was charged with murder over an incident that occurred on December 23, 2025.
Afuwape, a resident of Toronto, was taken into custody following investigations into the death of the victim, who was identified as a university undergraduate.
“Babatunde Afuwape, 28, of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with the murder of university student Shivank Avasthi, aged 20, which occurred on December 23, 2025,” the statement read.

Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and appealed to members of the public for assistance.
Investigators believe the suspect may have interacted with other individuals on the day of the incident and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
“We believe there may be individuals who interacted with the accused on the day of the incident. If you have any information, no matter how minor it may seem, please contact police,” the statement added.
