The Body of Federal and State Auditors General of Nigeria is urging government leaders to step up efforts in the fight against corruption. At the opening of a four-day capacity-building workshop for state and local government auditors in the South-East, the body’s National Chairman, Mr. Sunday Adegoke, stressed the need for stronger oversight on public finances.

Speaking in Abakaliki on Monday, Adegoke emphasized that financial misappropriation has become a global issue and called for intensified measures to tackle corruption in Nigeria. “Public finance managers, particularly those in key government roles, bear a critical responsibility to detect, prevent, and address financial fraud,” he stated.

Adegoke, who also serves as the Auditor General for Edo State, highlighted the workshop’s theme, “Enhancing Public Sector Auditors’ Performance for Relevance and Value Addition,” aimed at equipping auditors with essential knowledge to uphold high standards in public auditing.

He underscored the need for auditors to rigorously evaluate financial reports and flag any discrepancies to prevent fraud. “Our role is to review submitted financial reports, assess the management system, and report any instances of fraud as outlined by law,” he explained. “This workshop strengthens the skills of our personnel to maintain accountability and transparency in public finance.”

Adegoke also reminded the Auditors General of their constitutional duty to provide accurate reports to their respective State Houses of Assembly, ensuring all financial activities comply with Nigeria’s legal standards. He stressed that auditors who neglect their professional responsibilities would face consequences, as their actions are monitored by a strict code of conduct.

Dr. Samuel Uduma, head of the Sub-Supreme Body in Ebonyi State, praised the four-day training as a significant advancement for public auditors. He commended Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, for sponsoring the program, describing it as a landmark initiative that could set a precedent across Nigeria.
