The Nigerian Army has clarified reports regarding the alleged detention of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo in Port Harcourt, stating that his arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into oil theft in the Niger Delta region.
According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division, Soyombo was apprehended during a targeted operation at an illegal oil bunkering site. The operation, which was based on intelligence about a notorious gang involved in pipeline vandalism and oil theft, led to the arrest of several suspects, including the journalist.
While addressing the media, Danjuma reaffirmed the Army’s dedication to combating illegal oil activities in the region, highlighting their recent successes in dismantling criminal networks responsible for sabotaging Nigeria’s oil production. He urged media outlets to avoid spreading misinformation, insisting that the journalist’s detention is directly connected to the investigation into oil theft operations.

“Intelligence revealed the existence of a gang infamous for destroying pipelines and creating illegal connections to steal oil,” Danjuma stated. “During our operation, several suspects were arrested, including an individual claiming to be a journalist who was found at the illegal bunkering site.”
The Army emphasized that Soyombo, like others apprehended, is undergoing a preliminary investigation to determine his level of involvement. Danjuma also criticized reports portraying the incident as an attack on press freedom, reiterating the military’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economic resources from criminal exploitation.
In a sharp response to circulating rumors, the Army called on journalists to verify facts before publication, underlining the importance of accurate reporting in sensitive matters. Danjuma concluded by stressing that the Army remains steadfast in its mission to enhance Nigeria’s oil and gas output by eradicating criminal activities that undermine the nation’s economy.
