The Nigerian Army has thwarted a suspected bomb attack in Abia State after uncovering and safely neutralising multiple Improvised Explosive Devices in Umuchima Forest, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of April 3, 2026, followed credible intelligence from military sources, prompting a swift and coordinated response by troops.
In a statement issued by Captain Muyiwa Ayara on behalf of the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade, Ohafia, troops of the 145 Battalion (Rear) conducted a targeted clearance and fighting patrol into the forest based on detailed intelligence analysis.
During the operation, four IEDs were discovered at strategic points within the forest. Military authorities said the devices were planted to hinder troop movement and protect suspected insurgent hideouts operating within the area.

The explosives were subsequently handled by Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams from the 14 Brigade, who safely detonated the devices on site while recovering key components for further forensic examination.
According to the Army, the recovered materials will aid ongoing intelligence operations and provide deeper insight into the tactics and networks of criminal elements believed to be active in the region.
Troops have since intensified clearance operations across the forest and surrounding communities, targeting residual threats and dismantling logistics structures linked to suspected members of IPOB and its armed wing, ESN.
The military reassured residents of sustained security presence, urging the public to remain vigilant and share credible information with security agencies to support ongoing operations.
Security analysts say the latest breakthrough underscores the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven military operations in countering insurgency and restoring stability in the South-East.
