The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come under scrutiny on social media following a statement from its Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, who urged the youth in Nigeria to disengage from cybercrimes and embrace the wealth of positive opportunities available on the internet.
Addressing attendees at the Next Generation Engagement Forum held in Abuja on Tuesday, 19 November 2024, Mr. Olukoyede’s comments sparked a vigorous debate among social media users, many of whom emphasized the urgent need for the EFCC to prioritize the prosecution of corrupt politicians.
One user powerfully articulated the sentiment, asserting, “The EFCC must focus on apprehending those who have egregiously misappropriated national wealth, leaving countless youths without employment. If these systemic issues remain unaddressed, it is inevitable that young people will seek alternative means of survival through cybercrime.”
Another participant pointed out a troubling trend, stating, “The EFCC seems to have redefined its purpose, concentrating on cybercrime at the expense of the corruption that is central to its mission. This misplaced focus undermines the fight against economic and financial crime in Nigeria.”

Additionally, voices from the forum called for the EFCC to concentrate its efforts on politicians who persistently exploit public resources, while advocating for government initiatives that create jobs and drive industrialization to effectively engage the youth.
Moreover, a compelling suggestion was made for the EFCC to establish world-class IT centers across the nation, empowering the youth to channel their skills into positive endeavors. This transformative approach is poised to catalyze an IT revolution in Nigeria by turning potential negative influences into substantial economic contributions.
Another contributor emphasized the necessity of providing essential resources and support to guide young people in transforming cybercrime into productive ventures, highlighting the potential for excellence in their pursuits.
This debate is a strong reminder of the critical need for a robust, multifaceted strategy to tackle the challenges facing Nigerian youth and to enhance the overall economic landscape of the country.
