Renowned columnist and economic expert, Dr. Dele Sobowale, has decried corruption and poor leadership as the core impediments to Nigeria ‘s growth and development, emphasizing that the nation must begin holding corrupt leaders accountable to achieve meaningful progress.
Delivering a powerful keynote address at the 80th anniversary celebration of Government College Ughelli (GCU) on Friday in Delta State, Dr. Sobowale called for a return to integrity, accountability, and meritocracy in governance. According to him, the current leadership crisis is the root cause of the country’s stagnation.
“We must punish those who steal our commonwealth if we want this country to progress,” Sobowale stated passionately. “Corruption has brought us to this point, and until we demand integrity in leadership, our destination as a nation will remain uncertain. Look at the budgets of the past few years; the promises made and what was delivered are worlds apart. This leadership deficit and lack of accountability must end if we are to achieve meaningful growth.”
The event also featured prominent personalities, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who was represented by Prof. Babatunde Bolaji. Akume praised the school’s enduring legacy and urged the Old Boys Association to continue their commitment to the institution’s growth. “This institution has produced distinguished individuals across all fields of endeavor. The sacrifices of many have built a foundation of excellence that we must continue to nurture,” he remarked.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, reaffirmed the state’s focus on empowering students with entrepreneurial and technical skills. “To succeed in today’s world, students need more than certificates. They need the knowledge and skills to become wealth and job creators,” he emphasized.

Chief Albert,President-General of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA) Worldwide, appealed to the Delta State Government to concession the management of the school to the association. Highlighting the significant contributions of the alumni and corporate organizations, Akpomudje noted, “Over the last 20 years, we have invested billions of naira in sustaining this school, with support from entities like Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Chevron Nigeria Limited, and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as well as individuals like Amaju Pinnick.”
He also urged stakeholders to support the N3 billion, 1,000-seater auditorium project spearheaded by GCUOBA, describing it as a legacy initiative for future generations.
The 80th anniversary celebration was a testament to Government College Ughelli’s standing as a beacon of academic excellence. The event underscored the institution’s profound impact on society and inspired renewed commitment to its continued development.
