Nigeria has formally endorsed China’s new Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a timely intervention to strengthen the international system and promote fairer global representation. The endorsement was contained in a statement released on Thursday, September 11, 2025, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

The initiative, unveiled at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting in Tianjin, China, comes ahead of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. It builds on earlier Chinese-led frameworks such as the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI). The GGI focuses on tackling pressing global challenges, including climate change, digital inequality, technological disruptions, and the need for more effective multilateral governance.

Nigeria welcomed the GGI’s five guiding principles of sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered governance, and results-oriented action. According to the statement, these values align closely with Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and its broader push for reforms in international institutions.

“As one of Africa’s largest economies and a strong voice in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria views the Global Governance Initiative as a platform to advance shared priorities such as reforming the United Nations, promoting inclusive governance in areas like artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, and ensuring equitable development,” the ministry said.

The statement also highlighted the potential synergy between the GGI and Nigeria’s domestic development goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and the country’s principle of strategic autonomy. Nigeria pledged to collaborate with partners across the Global South to build consensus, foster stronger regional cooperation, and shape a more balanced global order.

By endorsing China’s Global Governance Initiative, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to a just and inclusive international system that reflects the aspirations of all nations, upholds shared responsibility, and ensures respect for sovereignty.
