José Peseiro says the negotiations by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) broke down due to contractual clauses and financial disagreements between both parties.
The Portuguese who was to take over from the interim coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles after the AFCON 2021 campaign, stated this through his verified Twitter account yesterday, January 9, 2022.
Following the termination of Gernot Rohr’s contract, the NFF penned down the 61 years old as the possible replacement to prepare the Super Eagles ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against the Black Stars of Ghana and to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Peseiro in his post tagged, “ANNOUNCEMENT”, said, “After several weeks of negotiations, during which time several news came out, on the part of the Nigerian Football Federation, that I would coach your selection, from the end of AFCON 2021, a fact that never confirmed, these did not materialize due to relative disagreement to contractual clauses and financial matters.
However, the NFF dropped its pursuit for the Portuguese coach to reconstitute the Super Eagles technical crew on Monday while retaining Augustine Eguavoen as the interim Technical Adviser.

According to the NFF statement, “The Nigeria Football Federation on Monday announced the reconstitution of the technical crew of the senior men national team, Super Eagles, with Augustine Eguavoen staying as an interim technical adviser while former Nigeria World Cup star and former U20 coach, Emmanuel Amuneke is drafted in as immediate assistant to Eguavoen.”
Assessing the profile of the ex-assistant coach of the Spanish football giant, Real Madrid, Peseiro had coached teams in the Middle East, Greece, South America, Romania, and Portugal numbering about 17 in his coaching career.
The NFF defending its decision to retain Augustine Eguavoen as the interim Technical Adviser of Nigeria senior men’s football team after failing to bring in the much talked about foreign coach, ascribed it to the group stage performance of the Super Eagles in the AFCON 2021 tournament.
The statement read in part: “We acknowledge and appreciate the interest that Jose Peseiro has shown during our very cordial discussions and have absolutely no doubt about his capacity. We believe that perhaps in the future, there could be an opportunity to work with him.
“However, in view of the positive performance at the Africa Cup of Nations we have decided to accept the recommendation of the technical and development committee to retain the Eguavoen-led coaching crew,” the statement added.
