Newcastle United is seeking clarification from Professional Game Match Officials Limited regarding a penalty appeal that was denied in their match against Chelsea.
Head coach Eddie Howe stated that Newcastle was denied a clear-cut penalty during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at St James’ Park after Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah knocked Anthony Gordon down.
The video assistant referee (VAR) supported referee Andy Madley’s decision not to award a penalty.
According to the Premier League Match Centre, Chalobah was considered to be in a side-to-side shielding position with the ball within playing distance.
Howe commented: “A call has already been made. We just want to understand the reasoning behind the decision.”
The PGMOL, the organization responsible for officiating all Premier League matches, has been contacted for a response.
At the time, Newcastle was leading 2-1, but Chelsea’s Joao Pedro equalized in the second half after a mistake by Malick Thiaw.

This season, no team has lost more points—13—from winning positions than Newcastle.
Currently, they sit 11th in the league, with only one away victory, and they will face Manchester United on December 26.
“My outlook is quite positive,” said Howe. “I know others may see it differently, but I believe we are making progress.
“We are heading in the right direction, but we still have a lot of work ahead to become the team we aspire to be—one that consistently wins.
“This has been our challenge this seasonthe inability to string together winning streaks, which is crucial for us.”
