The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Abdulrahman, has pledged to rebuild and reunite the party as it begins preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Abdulrahman, who assumed office unexpectedly on Saturday, made the commitment while addressing journalists at the party’s Wuse office in Abuja on Monday. His emergence followed the suspension of the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
In a dramatic turn of events, Anyanwu and his supporters held a separate meeting shortly after the suspensions were announced, where Abdulrahman was formally declared as the new Acting National Chairman.
Speaking under the theme “A New Dawn,” Abdulrahman expressed concern over the state of the PDP, describing it as a party in need of healing after years of internal crises and defections. “We are all aware of the current pitiable state of our glorious party because of the actions and inactions of our leaders and members,” he said. “From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years to being in opposition for over a decade now, our strength has been weakened by defections and divisions that have humbled the PDP.”

Abdulrahman said his leadership would focus on reconciliation, discipline, and the restoration of public confidence in the PDP. “I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and the support of critical stakeholders. My job is to heal the party of its wounds and end factionalisation,” he said.
He outlined plans to reposition the PDP by ensuring due process, conducting pending congresses across all levels, and organising an all-inclusive national convention that would produce a duly elected National Working Committee. “We must rebuild this party from the wards to the national level and return it to its founding principles,” he added.
The new chairman assured members and supporters that the PDP would rise again under a united front, declaring that “a new dawn has come, and with it, the renaissance of the PDP.” He called on all party members to set aside grievances and work collectively toward restoring the PDP’s place as a major political force in Nigeria.
