The Jigawa State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it seized a total of 1,944.389 kilograms of illicit drugs valued at about ₦2.8 billion in 2025, while securing the conviction of 136 drug traffickers across the state.

The disclosure was made on Tuesday by the Jigawa State Commander of the NDLEA, Hassan Kabaju, during a briefing on the command’s 2025 activities at its headquarters in Dutse, the state capital.

Kabaju said the seizures included 441.973kg of cannabis sativa, 1,373.886kg of psychotropic substances, and 128.520kg of other drugs of abuse.

He said a total of 577 suspects were arrested within the year under review, comprising 558 males and 19 females, out of which 136 were successfully prosecuted and convicted.

“The seized drugs are worth approximately ₦2.8 billion, based on prevailing market prices,” Kabaju said, describing the figures as a reflection of intensified enforcement efforts by the agency amid global campaigns against drug trafficking and abuse.

Beyond arrests and seizures, the NDLEA commander said the state command also focused on demand reduction, revealing that 552 drug users were counselled during the year, while 59 male drug-dependent persons were referred for treatment and rehabilitation at the command’s drug demand reduction unit.

Kabaju further disclosed that under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign, the command delivered 39,383 preventive education lectures and advocacy sessions in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and other public spaces across the state.

Despite the achievements, he lamented operational challenges, particularly the shortage of vehicles and administrative and operational equipment, which he said continued to hamper the command’s effectiveness.

Nevertheless, Kabaju assured residents that the NDLEA would not relent in its efforts, stressing that officers would continue to cover all 27 local government areas of Jigawa State in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

“The NDLEA will continue to intensify its operations to curb drug abuse and trafficking in Jigawa State,” he said, while commending the officers of the command for their dedication.

He also called for sustained public support and collaboration, describing community cooperation as critical to winning the fight against illicit drugs in the state.
