The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched a full investigation into the sudden death of its Cross River State Commander, Mr. Ogbonna Uzoma, who was found lifeless in his hotel room in Calabar.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.), announced the probe on Friday during a meeting of agency leaders in Maiduguri, Borno State, organized by the Federal Ministry of Justice. According to the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Marwa directed the Zonal Commander, ACGN Mathew Ewah, to immediately proceed to Calabar and support police authorities handling the case.
Uzoma, who only assumed duty in Cross River on August 18, 2025, had been staying in a hotel while searching for permanent accommodation. He was expected to meet with his officers at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, but colleagues and hotel staff were unable to reach him. After repeated attempts, a hotel worker entered his room through the ceiling and discovered him unresponsive. Police officers later arrived to secure the scene as investigations into the circumstances of his death began.

Marwa described Uzoma’s death as “deeply painful,” extending heartfelt condolences to the late commander’s family and praying for divine comfort. He added that the NDLEA will ensure a transparent inquiry to uncover what led to the tragic loss of one of its senior officers.
