The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified drug sensitization and surveillance activities across Delta State to curb drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The Delta State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Halilu Hamidu, disclosed this to journalists.

Mr. Hamidu said the agency remains committed to sustained drug awareness campaigns, especially in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and among youths across the state.

He explained that educating young people on the dangers of drug abuse is a major strategy for reducing substance misuse and related social problems.

The NDLEA commander also said the agency has extended its sensitization programmes to patent medicine store owners across the state.

He warned vendors against the illegal sale of controlled substances, stressing that drug misuse poses serious health, social, and security risks.

Mr. Hamidu urged patent medicine dealers to operate strictly within the provisions of the law.

On enforcement, he revealed that the agency has strengthened surveillance and counter-surveillance operations to identify drug dealers and disrupt supply networks.

He said the proactive measures have led to significant breakthroughs in the agency’s operations in recent times.

The commander disclosed that some of those involved in drug trafficking and sales in Delta State are foreign nationals, and not only Nigerians.

He added that the NDLEA is working closely with other security agencies to address cross-border drug trafficking.

Mr. Hamidu confirmed that the agency has recorded numerous arrests, with several suspects prosecuted and sentenced to prison.

He said this demonstrates the NDLEA’s zero tolerance for drug-related offences.

The commander reassured residents of the agency’s resolve to sustain the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
He called on members of the public to support the NDLEA by providing timely and credible information.
