The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised the alarm over Starlink’s unapproved data tariff hike, igniting a regulatory battle that could shake Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. According to the NCC, Starlink, a satellite internet provider, increased its data tariffs without obtaining the necessary approvals, violating the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, Dr. Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, expressed the Commission’s displeasure with Starlink’s actions. He noted that the company’s unilateral price adjustment contravenes Sections 108 and 111 of the NCA, as well as its licensing conditions.
“This breach is not only a violation of the law but also a threat to the regulatory stability of the telecom sector,” Muoka warned. “We were surprised that Starlink announced price changes after filing a request for approval from the Commission, a decision we were yet to communicate.”

The NCC, known for maintaining strict oversight of the telecom industry, hinted at impending enforcement measures against Starlink. “The Commission will take appropriate enforcement actions against any licensee that undermines the stability of the industry,” Muoka added.
Starlink’s decision to hike data tariffs without proper clearance has sent ripples across the telecommunications sector, raising questions about its commitment to regulatory compliance. As Starlink faces the heat from Nigeria’s telecom regulator, the company’s future in the market may hang in the balance.
