The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has appealed for calm and peaceful coexistence between the Isu community in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State and the Ukwa Mbiabong Ukwa Eburutu community in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. This appeal follows violent clashes earlier this month that claimed several lives and heightened tensions in the border regions.

NBC Director-General, Surv. Adamu Adaji, made the call in a statement issued by Efe Ovuakporie, Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit. The Commission condemned the violence, expressed condolences to the affected communities, and urged restraint from all parties to support ongoing efforts to resolve the disputes.

The NBC has been proactive in addressing the boundary issues, convening a Joint Meeting of Officials (JMO) on December 11, 2024, in Calabar. The meeting, chaired by Adaji, laid out key strategies to achieve a peaceful resolution. Among the resolutions was an agreement to share the disputed triangular land between the Okon-Aku and Ikun communities, pending approval from the Deputy Governors of the two states.

Further steps include the resolution of disputes over land at points identified as Abia/Cross River (AC)15A, involving Abia, Achara, and Biakpan communities. This matter will be addressed at a Joint Technical Meeting scheduled for January 20, 2025, in Abuja. The meeting also emphasized the submission of documents supporting claims over disputed points AC19 to AC23, involving the Mbiabong-Ito and Isu areas, by the same date.

Additionally, the NBC announced plans to establish a Joint Committee for the rehabilitation and return of displaced communities in the Mbiabong-Ito/Isu sector. This initiative underscores the Commission’s commitment to fostering sustainable peace and development in the affected regions.

During the December meeting, Deputy Governors Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu of Abia State and Rt. Hon. Peter Odey of Cross River State reaffirmed their states’ dedication to resolving the disputes amicably. Both leaders emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and peaceful dialogue to achieve a lasting solution.

The NBC reiterated its role as a neutral mediator, stressing the importance of dialogue over violence. It warned that aggression undermines development efforts and hinders progress toward resolving the disputes. The Commission urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies to collaborate in maintaining peace and fostering productive discussions ahead of the January 20th meeting.

As preparations for the next round of discussions continue, the NBC remains optimistic that its efforts, rooted in accurate surveying and equitable solutions, will pave the way for long-term stability and development in the region. It has called on all stakeholders to exercise patience and prioritize peace as the Commission works toward finalizing the boundary resolutions.
