The Nigerian Navy has announced plans to deploy additional naval platforms to the Eastern maritime flank in response to emerging security concerns and growing operational demands along the coastline.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, disclosed this during an official tour of naval formations under the Eastern Naval Command in Calabar. He said the move was part of efforts to strengthen maritime security, protect national assets, and enhance the Navy’s operational presence in the region.
Vice Admiral Abbas also drew attention to severe coastal erosion affecting naval jetties and waterfront facilities in Calabar, describing the situation as a major operational challenge. He appealed to the Cross River State Government for support in shoreline protection, noting that such intervention was necessary to safely accommodate additional naval vessels and sustain long-term naval operations.
According to the Naval Chief, his visit to the Eastern Naval Command formed part of a routine assessment of operational readiness and personnel welfare since he assumed office on October 30, 2025. He said the Navy remains committed to addressing both security threats and infrastructure challenges across its commands.

Receiving the Chief of Naval Staff in his office, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security and deepening strategic partnerships with federal security agencies. He emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration between the state and the Nigerian Navy, especially given Cross River’s strategic coastal location.
Governor Otu noted that effective maritime security is critical to safeguarding lives, investments, and national assets, adding that insecurity along the waterways could have far-reaching economic and security implications. He assured the Naval Chief of the state government’s readiness to complement federal security efforts through coordinated action, improved maritime infrastructure, and the deployment of state resources where necessary.
The planned deployment of additional naval platforms is expected to enhance surveillance, deter criminal activities along the Eastern maritime corridor, and reinforce Nigeria’s overall maritime security architecture.
