A nationwide blackout looms as members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) have initiated an indefinite strike due to unresolved issues with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
In a notice signed by the acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike, the union instructed electricity workers throughout the country to cease their services immediately until their grievances are addressed.
NUEE stated that the strike was prompted by the expiration of an ultimatum given to TCN management, which the union claims has neglected critical matters.

He mentioned the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, casualization of workers, lack of provision for tools, personal protective equipment, and operational vehicles as part of their grievances.
Others include unpaid salaries since April 2025, and outstanding retirement benefits
The union expressed that the treatment of workers’ welfare has been inadequate, warning that the electricity sector is being driven “down the drain” if immediate action is not taken.
This situation has sparked concerns about a new wave of nationwide power outages, reminiscent of NUEE’s strike in June 2024, which severely disrupted power supply and compelled the government to engage in emergency discussions.
Attempts to reach TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah for comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
The strike occurs amid government promises to reform Nigeria’s power sector, which continues to face challenges such as low generation, poor infrastructure, and labor disputes, despite years of attempts at reform.
