Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says that the National Sports Festival played a crucial role in promoting unity and rebuilding relationships after the Civil War.
His comments were made in a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi, in Abeokuta.
Obasanjo emphasized that the sports festival helps bring people together and encourages friendships, regardless of cultural differences.
While honouring the participants of the Gateway Games, he noted that sports can transcend politics and language.
“As we come together in Abeokuta for the 22nd National Sports Festival, let’s think about what these Games truly mean.
“Since the festival started in Lagos in 1973, it has been about more than just winning; it has helped repair bonds of peace and mutual respect.

“Today, it will continue to unite people and foster friendships while helping athletes prepare for future challenges,” Obasanjo said.
He stressed that the true spirit of the Games is not just about winning medals or rankings, but is found in the courage, determination, and joy of participating.
“The excitement in competition is not just about the scores; it’s about the love of the sport itself. The hard work and grit that brought you here are victories in their own way.
“For some, competing may not end with a medal, but the effort and perseverance shown are remarkable achievements in their own right.
“These Gateway Games celebrate that relentless spirit, the determination to push through difficulties and strive for excellence,” he added.
Obasanjo expressed hope that the Games will bring joy, unity, and the triumph of the human spirit.
