The National Association of Women in Sports has praised the organisation and growing impact of the 4th edition of the Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics, currently taking place in Yenagoa.

The group commended both the Local Organising Committee and the Main Organising Committee for delivering a well-coordinated championship that continues to strengthen wrestling development in Nigeria.

NAWIS also expressed appreciation to the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for prioritising athletes’ welfare and introducing incentives aimed at boosting participation and performance.

Adeniyi, who also serves as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, was praised for sustaining support for sports development despite the demands of his office.

Speaking with journalists on the fourth day of the championship, a board member of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and NAWIS representative, Adejoke Adebusoye, highlighted the significance of improved welfare packages for athletes, describing them as a critical driver of growth in the sport.

She noted that the provision of incentives and adequate support for contingents would encourage wider participation in future editions of the tournament, while also enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in wrestling.

Adebusoye, attending her first championship as a member of the federation’s board, also commended the Bayelsa State Government for its consistent investment in wrestling and sports development.

She expressed satisfaction with the level of hospitality extended to athletes, officials and delegates, noting that such efforts contribute to the success and reputation of the championship.

According to her, the initiative aligns with the broader vision of NAWIS to promote grassroots sports, empower female participation and strengthen institutional support for athletes across Nigeria.

The ongoing championship continues to attract attention within the sporting community, reinforcing Bayelsa’s position as a key hub for wrestling development in the country.
