The National Assembly has announced the suspension of legislative activities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
The decision comes in the wake of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in London, United Kingdom.
The announcement was made by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, in a statement released on Monday.
Ogunlana emphasized that the suspension was a tribute to Buhari’s enduring legacy and significant contributions to the nation.
He remarked that “in honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby postponed.”
The statement further encouraged all National Assembly members to adjust their schedules to enable full participation in the memorial and burial activities honoring the late President Buhari.

“In this time of mourning, we urge all legislators to reschedule their engagements to allow them to pay their respects and partake in the commemoration of his life and service,” the statement read.
Both chambers of the National Assembly conveyed condolences to the government and Nigerians, particularly to Buhari’s home state of Katsina, as well as to his wife Aisha, their children, and the entire Buhari family during this difficult time.
Ogunlana further shared: “President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and the integrity he demonstrated throughout his public service.”
