The National Assembly has thrown its weight behind the proposed ₦1.504 trillion 2026 budget of the Nigerian Army, promising firm legislative support and urgent steps to address persistent delays in the release of appropriated funds.
At a joint budget defence session held in Abuja, the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Army endorsed the ₦1,504,251,069,722 proposal presented by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu. Lawmakers described the allocation as essential to strengthening national security and sustaining military operations across the country.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, said members of both chambers expressed satisfaction with the Army’s financial projections after detailed deliberations.
“We had a joint session of the Senate and House Committees on Army on the 2026 budget and, after listening to the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff, all members expressed satisfaction,” Yar’Adua said.
He acknowledged that delayed fund releases remain a recurring challenge affecting Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including the armed forces. According to him, the legislature will work closely with relevant authorities to ensure smoother implementation of the Army’s budget.
“The Army is critical to our survival as a nation, and we will support you with everything that you need,” he added.
Chairman of the House Committee on Army, Hon. Aminu Balele, also commended the leadership and personnel of the Nigerian Army for their role in combating insurgency, banditry and other security threats.
Balele assured the military of continued legislative oversight and engagement aimed at guaranteeing timely disbursement of funds to enhance operational efficiency.
“We understand the challenges associated with budget releases, and we are ready to push for the timely release of funds so that you can deliver on your mandates,” he said.
He further praised the cooperation between the Senate and the House of Representatives in advancing defence funding priorities, acknowledging the support of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas in facilitating the process.
The ₦1.504 trillion allocation is expected to cover personnel costs, operational logistics, equipment procurement and infrastructure upgrades as the Nigerian Army continues operations in various theatres across the country.
With security remaining a top national concern, lawmakers said adequate funding and prompt cash backing of the defence budget are crucial to improving troop welfare, enhancing combat readiness and stabilising affected regions.
