The Nasarawa State Police Command has debunked widespread social media claims that over 30 female students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) were raped during a recent attack by suspected bandits.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, described the reports as false, stating that thorough investigations have revealed no such incident occurred.
“That report is false. Bandits entered into the school and raped over 30 female students? Our findings show that the report is not true,” Nansel said.
According to him, the command contacted key figures within the university community, including the institution’s Chief Security Officer and the information officer, as well as some students. All parties confirmed that no rape cases were reported.
“We also got across to the Chief Security Officer of the institution, and the information officer of the school; they said there was no reported incident of such. We spoke with some students; they said nothing of such happened. If it truly happened, the students would be vocal about it,” Nansel explained.
However, the police acknowledged a robbery incident that occurred on July 27 in the student village area. During the attack, a student’s mobile phone, power bank, and handbag were stolen, and one male student sustained injuries while attempting to flee the scene. No official report of rape was made to the authorities.

“There was no report of rape. That was the report we had. Over 30 female students raped? Haba! If there was, there’s no need to hide it; we are not the cause,” the police spokesman said.
Reacting to the rumour, a student leader who goes by the handle @deehsarasheed on X (formerly Twitter), also dismissed the rape claims as fake news, clarifying that only one case of sexual assault was reported and that the incident occurred at the student village—not within the main campus hostels.
“Here is the gist exactly as it happened: Student village was attacked by the criminals, not the hostel. Several rooms were robbed. Only one student was raped and that was because she was found naked after they barged into her room (she herself stated that she was laying naked),” the user posted.
He emphasized that the university’s female hostels remain highly secured and have never been breached due to heavy security presence, making them a preferred accommodation choice among students.
“The school has four female hostels as against one for males. I am a student of the school and among the student leaders,” he added.
