In a bid to intensify the battle against fake and substandard drugs, food, and cosmetics in the South-East, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has called on elites and residents in the region to actively participate in the fight. NAFDAC’s South-East Director, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, made this passionate appeal during a press briefing in Enugu, marking his one-year tenure in the zone.
NAFDAC’s Fight Against Harmful Drugs Yields Results
Iluyomade highlighted the agency’s efforts in reducing access to banned drugs often linked to violent and criminal activities. He emphasized that despite notable achievements, more can be done to safeguard the health of the nation, particularly in the South-East. He stressed the importance of educated professionals and elites joining forces with NAFDAC to curb the circulation of dangerous products.
Massive Raids and Seizures Across South-East Markets
NAFDAC has intensified its enforcement efforts, conducting major raids in markets and supermarkets, with a focus on Onitsha, the trading hub of the region. The agency successfully seized 2,719 bottles of banned substances, including tramadol and codeine, which are frequently abused due to their potent effects. In addition, expired and unregistered products were confiscated in a bid to clean up the market.

Iluyomade clarified that NAFDAC is not against business ventures but insists that businesses dealing in drugs, food, cosmetics, and chemical products must adhere to NAFDAC’s strict guidelines to ensure the safety of consumers. He called for a “win-win” situation where both businesses and consumers benefit from safe, regulated products.
Appreciation for Media, Security, and NAFDAC Staff
The director expressed gratitude to the media, market associations, and security agencies for their ongoing support. He specifically acknowledged the contributions of the Anambra State Police Commissioner and the Commander of the 302 Artillery Brigade, Onitsha, in supporting NAFDAC’s enforcement efforts. Iluyomade also commended the resilience of NAFDAC staff, particularly those who were attacked while performing their duties in Onitsha.
Call for Collaboration and Unity
NAFDAC is calling for greater collaboration with government bodies, both at national and sub-national levels, to enhance its regulatory efforts. Iluyomade urged the Ocha Brigade in Anambra to work within their jurisdiction and report suspicious activities involving fake products directly to NAFDAC for proper investigation.
Appeal to Striking Workers to Resume Duty
In light of ongoing security concerns, Iluyomade made a final plea to striking junior workers to return to their posts. He emphasized the need for all hands on deck, especially as the year draws to a close, to prevent the influx of harmful products and ensure the safety of food and drug supplies across the nation.
