The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an urgent warning about the spread of counterfeit condoms in Nigeria, following the discovery of an unregistered brand, “Foula Condoms,” in markets across Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State. This alarming find highlights potential health risks for Nigerian consumers.
NAFDAC’s alert follows a rigorous post-marketing surveillance study that identified Foula Condoms as unregistered and lacking English labeling, sparking concerns over the product’s safety, quality, and effectiveness. The agency’s Director General warned that low-quality condoms could seriously undermine efforts to prevent unintended pregnancies, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections, with significant public health consequences.

In a swift response, NAFDAC has mobilized its zonal directors and state coordinators nationwide to crack down on these dangerous products, intensifying inspections to remove unregistered condoms from the market. The agency is also leveraging its platforms to educate Nigerians on spotting counterfeit medical products.
Consumers are strongly urged to verify NAFDAC registration numbers on all condom packaging and to report any suspicious products immediately via NAFDAC’s hotline, email, or website. This proactive step is essential to ensuring that only safe, approved condoms are available, protecting Nigerians from the health risks associated with counterfeit goods.
