Rafael Nadal has defended World Number 1, Jannik Sinner, saying the doping suspension against the top-ranked player is unwarranted.
The renowned Spanish tennis player shared with reporters his full confidence in Sinner’s innocence, as the Italian athlete prepares for his return following a doping-related suspension.
Sinner is nearing the conclusion of a three-month disciplinary period after having tested positive for the prohibited substance Clostebol, which is an anabolic steroid, in March 2024.
Nadal, who stepped away from tennis last year after an illustrious career, expressed complete faith in the current anti-doping protocols.
“From my perspective, I genuinely do not believe that Jannik, because he is ranked No. 1 in the world, has experienced any different treatment compared to someone else, based on my view and understanding,” stated the 22-time Grand Slam singles winner.
“I have strong confidence in the system, having undergone all the tests for two decades, observing the strictness applied to every single action … and I trust the process.
“I cannot state anything differently nor think in another way because, otherwise, I would believe we are not in a just world, and I firmly believe that in this regard, we indeed are in a fair world.”

Sinner, a top contender for his first French Open title, is prohibited from participating in the event at the end of May.
Nadal, with 14 titles at Roland Garros, hopes Sinner’s potential victory won’t be mired in competition questions.
To win, Sinner must face formidable opponents like Carlos Alcaraz, who won last year.
“We all experience pressure from the media and the expectations others place on us, but ultimately, we are all human and understand how to cope with it,” Nadal shared with a CNN reporter.
“I do not think Carlos finds it particularly challenging to bear that pressure. He is an exceptional player and benefits from a supportive family.
“I believe he is performing excellently and enjoying an impressive career, and if he can avoid injuries, he will undoubtedly achieve even more—this is the key factor.
“I truly wish and firmly believe he will enjoy one of the greatest careers in the history of the sport,” he added.
