Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has dismissed allegations of a N1.3 trillion fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), labeling them a “fairy tale” and denying any misconduct.
On November 4, 2024, Okowa said he voluntarily appeared at the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office to respond to questions regarding his tenure. The EFCC’s probe centers on alleged misappropriation of state funds, including accusations of diverting N1.3 trillion from Delta State’s oil derivation funds and using public resources to acquire private assets, including housing estates and shares in Premium Trust Bank.
In an official statement released by Mr. Olise Ifeajika, Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Public Enlightenment, Okowa rebuffed the claims, describing them as a political smear campaign aimed at damaging his reputation. The statement said that Okowa holds no shares in Premium Trust Bank and that the mentioned properties are privately owned, not linked to any misappropriation of public funds.

According to Ifeajika, the accusations lack basis and are highly exaggerated. He stressed that Delta State’s audited financial records would disprove any claims of a trillion-naira fund diversion, painting the allegations as misleading.
Despite the controversy, Okowa’s legal team is optimistic, expressing confidence that the allegations will ultimately be dismissed as unfounded. Okowa awaits the next steps in the investigation, hoping to clear his name and move past what his supporters describe as politically motivated claims.
Meanwhile, Deltans are calling for a fair, proper and transparent investigation to ensure that justice is done.
