Panic has gripped the Ebom community in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State following an alarming outbreak of a mysterious sleep disorder that has left several residents hospitalized.
Medical investigations suggest the disorder may be linked to trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) or dangerous drug abuse, with test results revealing high levels of benzodiazepines, a powerful sedative with fatal consequences when misused.
Laboratory analyses conducted at Asi Ukpo Hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital confirmed the presence of these dangerous depressants, which should never be dispensed without a certified medical officer’s authorization.
Reacting to the crisis, Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, has ordered an urgent probe into local patent medicine sellers to uncover how these potent drugs are getting into the hands of unsuspecting community members.

Determine whether public health facilities are involved in the misuse or illegal distribution of these drugs. Study the health-seeking behavior of affected residents to understand patterns of substance abuse and Map out and regulate activities of patent medicine vendors, ensuring proper certification and monitoring of their supply chains.
With the rise of unregulated drug sales and the potential threat of a health disaster, authorities are intensifying efforts to curb the spread of the disorder. Residents are urged to report suspicious drug activities to prevent further casualties.
This developing story continues to raise serious concerns over public health safety, as experts warn of the long-term consequences if swift action is not taken.
