Confederation of African Football (CAF) have released a list comprising 90 nominees that include players, coaches and clubs in this year’s edition of CAF awards in men’s category.

With the event slated to take place next month on July 21 in Morocco, Nigeria got only two nominees in the categories of ‘CAF Player of the Year’ and CAF Young Player of the Year with Moses Simon and Akinkunmi Amoo featuring respectively.

Surprisingly, the name of Nigeria and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen was visibly absent from a list which paraded the names of Bayern Munich and Senegalese forward Sadio Mané, Liverpool’s and Egyptian Mohamed Salah,
Manchester City and Algerian Ryad Mahrez and others. The Trumpet Gathered

In a statement by CAF on Thursday, the nominees in various categories were selected by experts, legends and journalists taking into cognizance their performances from September 2021 to June 2022.

“A stakeholder panel made up of Technical Experts, CAF Legends and Journalists decided on the list for the various categories taking into consideration the performance of the nominee from September 2021 till June 2022 at all levels,” CAF claimed

“The winners of each category will be decided by a voting panel made up of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, Head Coaches & Captains of Member Associations and clubs involved at the group stage of the Interclub competitions,” stated the continental football governing body.

The exclusion of Victor Osimhen from CAF list, a player who scored 14 Italian Serie A goals in 27 appearances last season coupled with 5 assists is worrisome.

CAF added that the event will take place two days to the June 23rd final of the women’s African Cup of Nation in Morocco, and this coincides with the two years anniversary of the launch of the CAF Women’s Football Strategy.
