Tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva has once again stunned the world by securing her 10th consecutive tour victory, powering her into the semifinals of Indian Wells with a brilliant 7-5, 6-3 win over Elina Svitolina on Thursday. The 17-year-old prodigy, who made history last month as the youngest ever winner of a WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, is now breaking even more records. According to CNN, Andreeva is the youngest player to reach multiple WTA 1000 semifinals since the format’s inception in 2009, as well as the youngest to notch up 10 straight wins at these elite events, per Opta.
As anticipation builds for Friday’s semifinal clash, Andreeva is set to face world No. 2 Iga Świątek—a rematch that promises fireworks. Despite having previously defeated Świątek en route to her Dubai triumph, Andreeva insists that past results offer no advantage. “It doesn’t give me any benefit to our match tomorrow, because what happened happened, and the past is in the past,” she said. “Tomorrow is going to be a new day, new match, new conditions, new country. Everything is different. I’m going to try my best to prepare in the best way for our match, and I’m sure that it’s going to be an entertaining battle given our head-to-head is one-all.”
Defending Indian Wells champion Świątek, who advanced effortlessly by beating Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-3 in a rain-delayed match, is eager to claim her third crown at this prestigious tournament. The five-time Grand Slam champion is aiming to become the first woman since Martina Navratilova in 1990-1991 to win back-to-back titles at Indian Wells. “At the end it got pretty windy, which made it super tricky,” Świątek commented to the Tennis Channel. “You need to adjust quickly and it’s not that easy, but I’m happy that I was pushing until the end. I wanted to be composed and really focused, and I’m glad that I did that.”
