Guinea Bissau has been thrown into fresh political chaos after the military announced it has seized control of the country, just three days after presidential and legislative elections. Soldiers have suspended the electoral process, closed all land and air borders and moved to secure key government installations across Bissau.
Gunfire was heard around the presidential palace early Wednesday, prompting panic as armed troops blocked major roads and restricted movement around strategic sites. Witnesses reported heavy military presence at communication hubs, ministerial buildings and security agencies.
At army headquarters, senior officers delivered a nationwide address confirming the takeover. The declaration marks a sharp escalation in the nation’s long-running power struggle and raises new fears over stability in the West African region.
Early reactions from regional blocs and international observers are expected as the situation continues to unfold.
