In a groundbreaking move, Meta introduced celebrity AI voice clones at the 2024 Meta Connect developer conference in Menlo Park. The tech giant rolled out significant AI upgrades, allowing users to engage with voice clones of famous personalities like John Cena, Kristen Bell, Awkwafina, Dame Judi Dench, and Keegan-Michael Key across its platforms, including Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook.
With this new feature, Meta AI can now verbally respond to user questions, offering a more dynamic and personalized experience. While Meta’s celebrity voice clones are a major draw, they differ from OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT, which is known for its emotive and expressive responses. Meta’s AI voices, resembling Google’s Gemini Live, synthesize speech responses for a more streamlined, conversational feel.

Meta reportedly invested millions to secure the rights to use these celebrity voices, hoping to enhance user engagement on its platforms. However, some industry experts remain skeptical about the long-term impact of this feature. Will the star power of these voice clones translate to a more engaged user base, or is it just another flashy gimmick? Only time will tell.
In addition to its voice clones, Meta AI now boasts image analysis capabilities. Users can share photos and receive detailed information about the images directly from the AI, adding a new layer of interaction.
Meta also unveiled a revolutionary translation tool, currently in its pilot phase, that automatically translates and dubs creators’ voices in Instagram Reels into other languages. This feature syncs lip movements for a more authentic viewing experience, targeting multilingual audiences. The initial testing focuses on Latin American content, with translations between English and Spanish.
