Mojisola Meranda has officially resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, clearing the way for the potential reinstatement of impeached former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
Meranda announced her resignation at a special plenary on Monday afternoon, reading her resignation letter before lawmakers. She stepped down alongside all principal officers who were elected alongside her.
The former speaker had assumed office on January 13, 2025, following the controversial removal of Obasa.
However, sources indicate that Obasa himself may also step down shortly after his reinstatement, to pave the way for the election of a new speaker.
The leadership shake-up follows a high-level meeting on Sunday night, at Lagos House, Marina.

The meeting, attended by members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and lawmakers, reportedly brokered a deal aimed at resolving the assembly’s leadership crisis.
“Despite the tense atmosphere, it was a frank session where all parties were able to bare their minds, and in the end, the stakeholders agreed on a win-win decision expected to end the shutdown of the House,” a source familiar with the discussions revealed.
The Lagos Assembly has been embroiled in internal turmoil, following Obasa’s impeachment, leading to a political stand-off.
With Meranda’s resignation and Obasa’s likely reinstatement, the House is expected to move forward with the selection of a new speaker in the coming days.
