Manchester United could move to sign a new left winger this summer, despite having spent the past three transfer windows offloading wide players during Ruben Amorim’s tenure.
Current boss Michael Carrick has indicated the club may need to strengthen on the left flank as part of a broader squad rebuild.
While he stressed the situation is “not a huge concern at the moment,” Carrick admitted it is “definitely something to look at.”
Historically, United’s most successful eras have been built around elite wingers, including club legends George Best, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the current squad looks markedly different after a significant reshuffle.
United began last season with five senior wide options, but departures have dramatically reduced those numbers.
Jadon Sancho is currently on loan at Aston Villa and is unlikely to remain at Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer.
Antony joined Real Betis in a permanent deal, while Alejandro Garnacho moved to Chelsea.
Marcus Rashford, another natural left-sided forward, spent time on loan at Villa before securing a temporary move to Barcelona.
The Spanish club hold an option to buy, though negotiations remain ongoing as Rashford still has two years left on his United contract.
That leaves Amad Diallo as the only orthodox winger currently available, though Carrick has deployed other players in wide roles, including former Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu.
Carrick pointed to attacking flexibility within the squad, noting that Matheus Cunha has impressed when deployed wide, even if the Brazilian prefers drifting into central areas.
United have been linked with several potential reinforcements. Among them is Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig, while Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United has also been mentioned as a possible target.

However, the club’s transfer priorities may complicate any move for a winger.
United are expected to strengthen in central midfield, with Brazil international Casemiro set to depart and Uruguay’s Manuel Ugarte yet to establish himself under Carrick.
With the transfer window yet to open, Carrick insists he will continue working with his current options.
“We’re always thinking about the perfect balance and connections across the front line,” he said.
“There are different ways of doing it, and we have really good options.”
As United attempted to rebuild while managing financial constraints, the wide-left position has emerged as a key area that could define the club’s next phase.
