Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mohammed Pate, has announced the commencement of the long-awaited malaria vaccination campaign in regions most affected by the disease. This monumental effort marks a historic step in saving millions of lives, particularly among children, in the battle against one of Africa’s deadliest diseases.
“This groundbreaking step brings us closer to protecting millions of lives, especially children,” declared Minister Pate. The vaccine rollout is part of Nigeria’s commitment to eradicating malaria, while also positioning the country as a leader in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). With AMR threatening the efficacy of critical treatments, including antimalarials, this initiative signals a bold response to a global health crisis.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, convened a High-Level Stakeholders’ Dialogue in Lagos on December 1, 2024. The forum focused on reshaping Nigeria’s pharmaceutical landscape, tackling regulatory barriers, boosting local manufacturing, and driving research and development innovations.

Key takeaways from the dialogue include the activation of the Presidential Initiative on Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), a transformative government reform aimed at enhancing the accessibility and affordability of essential medicines. Collaboration among stakeholders was highlighted as the cornerstone for catalyzing growth and ensuring equitable access to life-saving treatments.
“Together, we can build a sustainable, self-sufficient pharma industry that not only meets local needs but competes globally!” Dr. Salako declared, adding that the goal is to leapfrog Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector into a global powerhouse.
