Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk says malaria is not a result of witchcraft, but is caused by mosquitoes breeding in dirty environments.
Speaking at an event to mark the 2025 World Malaria Day in Ikom Local Government Area of the state, Dr. Ayuk charged residents to prioritize environmental sanitation and to consistently use mosquito nets.
He called on all residents to take responsibility in the fight against malaria, explaining that “prevention must become a daily habit if we are to achieve a malaria-free community.”
Highlighting the broader health agenda of the state, he revealed that Governor Otu’s administration aims to make Cross Riverians enjoy one of the best healthcare systems in Nigeria by 2027.
Dr. Ayuk, reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating malaria, describing it as the leading cause of death, particularly among children under five and pregnant women.

He cautioned residents against self-medication, and warned against the use of uncertified malaria drugs urging anyone experiencing fever symptoms to visit the nearest health facility for proper testing and treatment.
