The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has condemned in strong terms the recent bomb attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State, which claimed 23 lives and left 108 others injured.

In a statement jointly signed by the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, alongside other caucus leaders, including Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Madaki and Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, the lawmakers described the incident as “gruesome” and deeply disturbing.

They said the coordinated explosions, allegedly carried out by suicide bombers, occurred at the Main Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover at a time residents were going about their lawful activities.

“The Caucus is very sad and pained that the triple explosions happened simultaneously at a time when residents were going about their lawful and legitimate businesses,” the statement read.

The lawmakers expressed further concern that the attacks were carried out during the holy periods of Ramadan and Lent, noting that the timing underscored a lack of regard for both Islam and Christianity.

Describing the perpetrators as “outlawed felons and despicable renegades,” the caucus extended condolences to the families of the victims as well as the government and people of Borno State.

They urged the Federal Government to immediately direct the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to scale up medical and humanitarian assistance for those affected.

The caucus also called on the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.

They further stressed the need for enhanced collaboration among security agencies to boost surveillance and safeguard lives and property in Maiduguri and other parts of the state.

The lawmakers pledged to pursue necessary legislative measures aimed at addressing the security challenges and preventing future occurrences.
