Lt. Col. Anele Onyinyechi Appolonia has made history by being appointed as the Nigerian Army’s first female Acting Director of Public Relations.
This milestone highlights the growing role of women in leadership positions traditionally held by men.
Lt. Col. Anele holds qualifications from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), demonstrating her commitment to effective communication and public engagement within military contexts. Her official assumption of this pivotal role is set for April 22, 2025.
In her new capacity, Lt. Col. Anele takes over from Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, a role that involves preserving and promoting the rich history of the Nigerian military.

Prior to her current appointment, Lt. Col. Anele completed an intensive six-month strategic course at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, equipping her with advanced skills in public relations, strategy, and military operations.
She has a background in civil-military relations, having served prominently in the Department of Civil-Military Relations, where she played a critical role in fostering partnerships between the military and civilian sectors.
She has experience as the Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff underscores her expertise in managing communication and media relations, further preparing her for her new responsibilities. With her appointment, Lt. Col. Anele not only sets a precedent for future generations of women in the military but also aims to enhance the communication strategy of the Nigerian Army during a pivotal time for national security and public engagement.
