The Vice Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, Ebonyi State, Professor Jesse Uneke, has called on library scientists in Nigeria to assert their value in academia and contribute actively to societal progress. Speaking at the 3rd National Conference of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Ebonyi State Chapter, Professor Uneke emphasized the critical role of information in navigating contemporary challenges.

Addressing participants on the theme, “Information Services for Sustainable Development: Determinants, Dimensions, and Dynamics in the Digital Society,” he urged library scientists not to relegate their discipline, stressing its pivotal role in academic and societal advancement.

“Library science goes beyond lending books. It encompasses information management and research, which are essential for solving the multidimensional problems of our society,” said Uneke.

He highlighted the transformative power of information, describing it as a tool to reshape human attitudes and address societal challenges. Uneke cautioned against the dangers of misinformation, urging library scientists to step up as guardians of accurate and impactful information.

“We are in an era of information warfare. What people acquire molds their attitudes and determines outcomes in their lives. Library scientists must rise to the challenge of providing credible information services that drive sustainable development,” he added.

In his welcome address, Dr. Igwe emphasized the mission of the NLA to promote education, training, and practice in information management for societal development.

He described the conference theme as timely and relevant, addressing strategies for achieving sustainable development and aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The intellectual exchange and knowledge sharing at this conference will significantly advance the mission of sustainable development,” Dr. Igwe stated.

Participants and stakeholders have lauded the conference for spotlighting the evolving role of library scientists in today’s digital society. Discussions focused on leveraging information services to tackle challenges, enhance education, and promote societal enlightenment.
